Whales in Puerto Vallarta

humpback whale

magnificent creatures

The photos of these magnificent creatures were taken in February and March of 2022, off the shore of Puerto Vallarta in the Banderas Bay.

My guides were marine biologists associated with Ecología y Conservación de Ballenas, Ecology and Conservation of Whales (ECOBAC), a Mexican non-profit organization, devoted mainly to research, protection, and conservation of Mexico’s natural resources, especially the Humpback Whale in Banderas Bay.

A Whales tail is like a fingerprint.  ECOBAC has been tracking these whales by their uniquely induvial tails for many years now and run the catalog of humpbacks in Banderas Bay.  They have been tracking almost 3,000 different whales and they have a database of more of 9,000 photos. You can visit their website here,  http://www.ecobac.org

Some of my whale photos are being used by the organization for research purposes as some of the whales I have photographed have been traced to Banderas Bay dating back to 2006.

With the help of this group and the use of a hydrophone, I was able to capture this amazing sound that these whales make.   That is the sound you hear in the accompanying video.
